Enjoy!

CF – BIGGEST INFLUENCES #3: Kristof (guitar)

1. GUNS ‘N ROSES – YOU COULD BE MINE
This was the band that got me into guitar playing! I remember having a videotape of their concert in Paris in 1992 and all I wanted was to be able to play along with this tape and be like Slash! I never got to that though; and now we even have a guitar player in Crimson Falls that looks more like Slash than me; damn… 😉 Another nice anecdote; my first electric guitar ever was a Gibson Epiphone I won with a contest in Humo. Not just a guitar; it was signed by all the members of Aerosmith!

2. MACHINE HEAD – DAVIDIAN
An all-time metal classic. It remembers me of all those great Roadrunner bands from the 90’s like Fear Factory, Life Of Agony, Biohazard, Type O Negative and many others. They were all at their peak at that time & most of these bands played on the legendary Dynamo Open Air 1995. This was my first festival experience and damn, like the print on my festival shirt said: “those who know cannot explain”. Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast and get ready for the bad-ass outro!

3. BACKFIRE! – FREEDOM
During the nineties me and my friends started listening more and more to hardcore & eurocore bands like Hard Resistance, Rykers, Discipline, Violation Of Trust, Brightside and my others. My personal favorite has always been Backfire! They have a few classic hardcore albums, certainly their debut cd Rebel4Life. Unfortunately that cd isn’t on Spotify so I choose ‘Freedom’. M-Town style!

4. MADBALL – DOWN BY LAW
Another favorite hardcore band of mine is Madball. Especially this song made a huge impression to me. I had a tape of MTV’s Headbangers’ Ball with this clip in it; watched it over and over again. So much energy, so much aggression… kick ass.

5. LENGTH OF TIME – THOUGHT OF THE ENSLAVED
After some time I got to know more and more bands mixing up more metal in their sound and my musical taste evolved more in this direction. I always loved Length Of Time; I could have picked each song of the ‘Shame To This Weakness Modern World’ EP; you need to listen to it in a whole. The aggression in these songs and recordings are certainly an inspiration to CrimsonFalls!

6. MORNING AGAIN – NOT BY BIRTH
Another kick-ass metalcore band from the 90’s; classic cd, classic song. So much aggression in the voice, awesome!

7. HEAVEN SHALL BURN – BEHIND A WALL OF SILENCE
This song was a big influence to me; not only musically be also when it comes to writing lyrics. Especially the subjects they choose to write songs about got me to write about real, concrete subjects as well in an understandable language. This song for instance deals with the way the disabled have to find their way in our society. ‘Whatever It May Take’ is my favorite HSB album. Afterwards they gradually lost me with their newer releases; but to me this one remains a masterpiece.

8. AT THE GATES – BLINDED BY FEAR
This is one of those cd’s you can put on and listen to completely without getting bored. This cd became so influential, certainly after At The Gates called it quits. It was great to see them on Graspop a few years ago. Tight right?

9. ABORTED – THE SAW AND THE CARNAGE DONE
Youri already put this song in his playlist as well; but fuck it, I want it to! 😉 My all-time Aborted favorite, some crazy riffs in here and a heavy breakdown. Aborted was influential to us in many ways; musically and also with the artwork Svencho did for us on ‘The True Face Of Human Nature’ & ‘Fragments Of Awareness’. Lots of respect to Sven and everything he achieved with this band.

10. BEHEMOTH – HORNS OF BAPHOMETH
My favorite Behemoth cd, certainly an influence on some of our songs, like the chorus in ‘Behold The Crimson Falls’ for instance. I still give this one a spin from time to time.

11. NEVERMORE – MY ACID WORDS
Nevermore; that voice hey; love it or hate it. I love it in contrast with Nevermore’s ‘hardest’ work on ‘This Godless Endeavour’ & ‘Enemies Of Reality’. Their other albums don’t appeal to me as much, but these two… damn; excellent, refreshing & ingenious riffs from Jeff Loomis.

12. ALL SHALL PERISH – THERE’S NO BUSINESS TO BE DONE ON A DEAD PLANET
Allright, if I had to pick one song as my all-time favorite song; this would be it! I love everything about this song, especially the crazy 2nd riff and moshy middle part. Sick song, major influence to CrimsonFalls; just check it! Fuck all the haters who say every deathcore-band sounds the same. To me ‘deathcore’ is a progressive genre, mixing up the best of different styles of music and creating new stuff without boundaries. The technicality of deathmetal, the mosh & aggression of hardcore/metalcore and from there on everything is possible.

13. WHITECHAPEL – MAKE IT BLEED
If I name All Shall Perish as one of our biggest influences, I also have to mention Whitechapel. Their grooves, sound and voice stand without comparison. At this point still one of my favorite bands and biggest influences.

14. WINDS OF PLAGUE – ANGELS OF DEBAUCHERY
Show your fuckin’ face… Love this band, especially their singer; an awesome voice & an animal on stage. Deathcore getting more hardcore by the record, but always in your face.

15. EMMURE – PROTOMAN
Finishing this list of; Emmure! This is the song I’ve been spinning the most over the last couple of months, so I had to put it in this list. So much aggression in this song; gotta love it!
